To provide confidential emotional support for people experiencing feelings of distress or despair, including those which may lead to suicide. To provide such support by telephone, face to face, email, letter, SMS and whatever other means of communication may be adopted by Samaritans.

Is this role flexible? Yes, volunteer shifts on rota system, duties to be arranged with the branch As a guide, the typical arrangement is 3-4 hours per week including an overnight duty approximately once a month, or as required by the branch,

Min hours expected per week: 4 hours

Requirements: Full training will be provided but you must come prepared to/or with the ability to: - To be able to actively listen without prejudice - Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times - To be able to communicate clearly with callers and branch volunteers - Ability to deal sensitively with all callers, including vulnerable people, those with mental health issues and children, as necessary - Able to follow procedures and maintain systems - Ability to recognise the need for support (in themselves and others) and to seek or provide support where necessary - Awareness of own emotional triggers and can cope with own feelings - Demonstrate an understanding and acceptance of Samaritans values

Support offered:

/ Induction/ One to one supervision/ Peer support/ Mentoring/buddying/ Social events/meetings

Volunteers will be carrying out the activities:

/ With other volunteers

You will always be volunteering with at least one other person and the support of a shift leader.

Additional support needs: All efforts will be made to ensure that you can participate in this volunteering opportunity

Training provided: Full training, including: - Induction - 3 hours - Samaritans Initial Training Stage One - 9 x 3 hour sessions - Samaritans Initial Training Stage Two - 4 x 3 hour sessions You are assigned a mentor to support you until you are confident and comfortable with the role.
