Volunteers use their personal experience of prostate cancer to provide empathy and support over the telephone. Callers to the Helpline are matched to either male or female peer support volunteers according to their needs. Service users may be a diagnosed man or a partner of a man that has been diagnosed.

Requirements: Skills and experience You must: • Have personal experience of prostate cancer as someone who has been diagnosed or as a partner, family member or friend. It must be at least 12 months since diagnosis or bereavement before you can train for this role. • Have effective communication and interpersonal skills • Be able to demonstrate listening skills and empathy when dealing with others • Respect different viewpoints • Understand the importance of confidentiality and maintaining it • Be committed to boundaries and aware of the limitations of the role • Be non-judgemental • Be able to deal with challenging behaviour

Volunteers will be carrying out the activities:

Training provided: All volunteers must attend training that includes An introduction to the work of Prostate Cancer UK Confidentiality Boundaries Listening and reflection skills Taking care of yourself All volunteers must attend training that includes: • An introduction to the work of Prostate Cancer UK • Information about prostate cancer • Confidentiality • Boundaries • Listening and reflection skills • Taking care of yourself Volunteers must attend annual refresher training and any additional role-specific training required.
