Volunteer with us!
6th Dec

Volunteer with us! Learn new skills, meet new people. Be there.

A lot of people need us. That’s why our volunteers are always around to give anyone who is stuggling to cope the space and time to talk.

Come along to our next information sessions to find out more about volunteering with us

Wednesday December 6th

At 8.45am– 12pm followed by 30 minutes interview

To be a Samaritan you need to be over 18 yrs. of age, but you do not need any previous experience or qualifications.  You will need to be open -minded and non-judgemental. By volunteering with Samaritans, you will be able to make a difference to others experiencing despair and/or suicidal thoughts.

All Samaritan volunteers are trained in the skills needed to equip them for their role, whether as a support or listening volunteer. The training helps you gain an increased self-awareness helpful in other aspects of your life.

To start the process of joining our branch, please attend one of our upcoming Information events.

You will be asked to complete an application form, and have a briefing on the Disability and Barring Service (DBS) followed by information presentations and a few group activities to see how you get on as part of a team. You will get a chance to meet experienced SAMS, and to ask as many questions as you wish.

The Interviews that follow are to give us a deeper understanding of your reasons for applying and consist of a standard set of questions. We do not automatically accept everyone who applies. It is important that we believe that volunteering with Samaritans is the right thing for you.

Before applying, you will need to be aware of the time commitment involved in being a Samaritan listening volunteer. Every Samaritan is expected to do a weekly shift of 4 hours, including one involving night time hours a month and one weekend duty. The night duty will require you to be free enough the next day, to allow you time to recuperate. These shifts cover anti- social hours, but can be the most rewarding. Some of our most needy callers are in touch at this time.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to be in touch.
