ASH Wales was established in 1976 and is the leading voluntary organisation in Wales tackling tobacco use. Our main aim is to achieve a reduction in and eventual elimination of the health problems associated with tobacco use.
ASH Wales: Values the unique and valuable contribution made by volunteers and is committed to working in ways which encourage and support volunteers. Is committed to involving volunteers in appropriate positions which would benefit the organisation, volunteers, members, users of services and the wider community.
ASH Wales: Appreciates that volunteering is enjoyable and can change and enrich the lives of individuals. Recognises that volunteering has the capacity to build skills and confidence and contributes to individuals’ personal development. Respects volunteers in both listening to and learning from what they have to say - feedback from volunteers is always welcome. Acknowledges volunteering is of wider benefit to society. Values volunteering as an inclusive act of participation. Recognises that volunteering has an important role to play in helping people who are excluded from society to participate and become active members of their communities. Recognises that volunteering is at the heart of the emerging civil society agenda and that through volunteering people can influence decisions. Distinguishes volunteering from employment and puts its flexibility and informality to best effect to complement the work of paid staff.
ASH Wales currently has the following volunteering opportunitites
Peer Health Promoters - For volunteers aged between 16 - 25 years
Peer Health Promoters will be trained to work with young people in their local communities to deliver and provide informed and accurate information about smoking prevention and assistance with cessation. They will also be trained to provide brief intervention for smoking to their peers in their communities providing young people with the facts about tobacco – beyond the traditional "smoking is bad for your health" advice. The Peer Health Promoters will work to reduce tobacco use amongst their peers within their community, and will also develop skills that are appropriate to future community development and/or employment. The volunteers will engage with all young people aged 11-18 years regardless of smoking status. Peer Health Promoters will encourage young people to understand a range of factors around tobacco including economic, environmental, health, corporate responsibility, human rights and marketing. Peer Health Promoters will also be attending community events and schools etc to provide peer led information sessions to other peers around factors affecting tobacco use.
Peer Events Promoters - For volunteers aged between 16 - 25 years

The Peer Events Volunteers will work alongside ASH Wales’s staff at local, national and regional events and conferences throughout Wales. The attendance at these events from young people will allow for peer to peer dissemination of information. Peer Events Volunteers will encourage young people to understand a range of factors around tobacco including economic, environmental, health, corporate responsibility, human rights and marketing. The Peer Events Volunteers will be trained to work with young people in their local communities to provide informed and accurate information about smoking prevention and assistance with cessation. The Peer Events Volunteers will be working closely with the ASH Wales team at a variety of locations throughout Wales to promote and market the work that ASH Wales does. Volunteers will be expected to be hands on at events helping staff members to set up stalls/ conferences and to distribute information as necessary. |
Newsletter Volunteers - For volunteers age 14+

ASH Wales is looking to recruit a handful of volunteers that will work together to develop further the ASH Wales newsletter. At present the newsletter includes information about news headlines in local and national papers, dates for your diary and thoughts of the month. The volunteers will be responsible for collating information, stories and events related to the work that ASH Wales does across the Wales; pulling it all together and arranging the information into a fully accessible format. The volunteers will be encouraged to create new ideas for the newsletter and to positively promote the work of Ash Wales. The Newsletter will be issued monthly.
Disclosures will be undertaken. Training provided.
