Community Work:
Volunteers needed to design and create costumes for the annual Porth Carnival
Disability and Health:
Elite SEA peer support mentors needed to support someone of a similar age to themselves with additional educational needs, aged 15 -19 years of age

The Bureau serves the area covered by the Community Councils of Aberhafesp, Bettws, Caersws, Churchstoke, Dwyriw, Kerry, Llandinam, Llandyssil, Llangurig, Llanidloes, Llanidloes Without, Manafon, Mochdre, Montgomery, Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn, Trefeglwys and Tregynon.

The main office location is in Newtown town centre. The Bureau's office is fully accessible to the disabled, with disabled parking permitted immediately outside the Bureau's main entrance.

South Montgomeryshire Volunteer Bureau was established in 1994. The Bureau was initially established to recruit volunteers to help the most vulnerable people, to visit them regularly and offer friendship and company, to provide contact with the outside world and also to do practical tasks such as gardening, shopping and visiting the library.

The Bureau's aims are:
  • Maintain, develop and enhance the Bureau services including outreach services throughout South Montgomeryshire
  • Promote volunteering throughout South Montgomeryshire by developing services appropriate to rural Powys for the recruitment, training, placing and support of volunteers
  • Enable people who are rurally isolated to participate in their local community through volunteering
  • Provide information, advice and support to people to enable them to make suitable choices about volunteering
  • Provide on-going support and advocacy to volunteers whom we place with other organisations
  • Increase the awareness of volunteering and its benefits to the communities of South Montgomeryshire
  • Benefit the local community through the activity of volunteers, in particular to help those people who are disadvantaged due to age, mental or physical disability
  • Promote and support the development of local voluntary sector initiatives and services in response to local need and maintain a database of local contacts
  • Provide information to local communities about community activities, opportunities and services concerned with furthering health promotion, relieving poverty, distress and sickness and advancing education
  • Enhance networking between local groups
  • Help support the activities of local organisations by giving advice on good practise e.g. insurance, volunteer policies
  • Aid in community transport using volunteer drivers to provide transport for the elderly, disabled, learning disabilities and people on low income
  • Provide in-house opportunities for volunteers and young people to gain office administration experience
